O livro conta a história dos trânsitos de Vênus ocorridos em 1761 e 1769. O estilo de escrita da autora é muito bom e acabamos quase que nos sentindo parte das expedições de astrônomos de vários países em busca dos melhores pontos de observação do fenômeno. O livro começa com o desafio proposto por Halley quase 50 anos antes do primeiro trânsito. Ele prevê quando o fenômeno vai ocorrer e conclama os cientistas a empreenderem expedições para observar o trânsito. Observações precisas podem dar informações importantes como a distância Terra-Sol e o tamanho do sistema solar. Ao longo do livro temos um pouco da motivação dos países em se envolver nesta empreitada, da história dos astrônomos escolhidos e os sucessos e frustrações das expedições.

The book tells the story of the two transits of Venus that took place in 1761 and 1769. The book begins with Halley making a call to scientists almost 50 years before the first transit. He predicts when the phenomenon will occur, the best points of observation calls on scientists to undertake and urge the scientists to take part in a world effort to observe the phenomenon. Accurate observations can provide important information such as the Earth-Sun distance and the size of the solar system. Throughout the book we see why some countries choose to participate, how they selected their astronomers (and information about their lives) and the success stories and frustrations of the expeditions.
